Without completely replacing the intention of my project, I found another use of material which could potentially save my cactus. It has been trending that if you place a banana peel in a glass of water for 1-3 days, that it will make a natural fertilizer. I figured if I use the water I am repurposing on top of the banana peel, that it will nourish the cactus to the max and it will be completely saved. We’ll see. From GardenMyths.com, I learned that the reason bananas have become so popular is because their peels are dense of protein, which nitrogen naturally follows. The site also weighs in on the potential of other organic matter to provide the same service. In other words, what makes bananas so special? According to the Chemical Analysis of a Banana Peel, the 3.5% of protein in the peel is equivalent to 0.6% of nitrogen. Well whoopty-do. What the heck does that mean? Apparently, nothing. Especially since the 1-3 days the “banana tea” is left to steep is nowhere near enough time for the peel to decompose and provide the nutritional value it claims. Ahhh whatever, worth a shot.
